All you need to know about Kodachadri Trek

If you are planning to go to Karnataka for trekking, you must try Kodachadri Trek. It is a perfect trek for you. Kodachadri Trek is one of the most beautiful treks in South India. 

The name ‘Kodachadri’ comes from a Sanskrit word that means a hill of Kutaja flowers. “Katuja” basically means Jasmine flowers. 

Therefore, Kodachadri is known as the “hill of jasmine flowers”  Kodachadri trek is located in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. Kodachadri trek is surrounded by Mookambike National Park, providing your eyes with splendid beauty. You will find several endangered species here including Rock Python, Tigers, Malabar Langur, etc. It is covered with Shola forests. It is a tough trek to do. The best time to visit Kodachadri Trek is from October to January and from June to September. It is the tenth highest peak of Karnataka.

This trek is known for adventurous activities and thrilling experiences. It has breathtaking sunrise and sunsets. You can take the jeep to travel. If you want to enjoy it here and spend some time experiencing the natural beauty, then you can take it home for rent in Nagodi or Nittur village. They are located at the foothills of the mountain. You can start your trek from here or you can also take a jeep. 

The jeep will cost Rs 400-500 per person. It is recommended to hire a guide so that you can experience splendid beauty with a bunch of information regarding the place. It will cost around Rs 500-1000 to hire a guide. You will have to cross many small streams and dense forests. If you want to start camping in the middle of the trek, you can start camping near the premises of Kodachadri Information Bureau but with their permission only. If you want to go on the Kodachadri trek via Hidlumane falls, you have to hire a guide. To make it a convenient journey, it is recommended to talk about it in advance. You don’t have to take permission to trek on these hills.

It has an altitude of 1343m above sea level. 

The total distance of this trek is 20-22km.

BEST TIME TO VISIT KODACHADRI TREK

The best time to visit the Kodachadri trek is between September to January. Between this time, the trek will be covered with green grass, cold breezes, and the temperature will be really good. The atmosphere will be fresh and filled with greenery. But if you go on this trek in March time, you will only find dry grass, high temperature, and humidity. You will not like the atmosphere. So, it is recommended to visit the trek in the given time period. But if you still want to travel some other time than this, you can.

THINGS TO CARRY FOR THIS TREK 

You should carry a first aid kit with you in case of any emergencies. 

You must carry a water bottle(1-2 liters).

Wear trekking shoes for smooth and convenient trekking. 

Carry a compass or a map of the trek with you in case you lost the way.

If you are planning to stay a day or two, carry an extra bag of clothes.

If you are planning to travel during day time, wear a sun cap to protect yourself from heat.

SOME DON’TS WHILE TREKKING

• Don’t overpack things. Take only those which are essential for you during the trek.
• Don’t spray excess perfumes and if okay don’t use it even in a small quantity.      Aromatics attract flies and insects. 
• Don’t drink alcohol or smoke during the trek.
• Don’t go away from the group. We have seen it in movies and think that it looks cool to go alone but it will really be difficult for you if you lost during trekking.
