Milk: The White Gold And Its Role In Any Economy
The ecosystem’s wellness and health are always determined by the scenic beauty of the place and, secondly, the health of the livestock in that country, city, state, continent, etc. An important segment of cattle breeding is the breeding of cows; in European and western countries, cows are reared for meat, whereas in south-east Asian countries, the cow is considered sacred. Milk was always reared by milkmen and then sold in markets.
The white revolution of 1970 led to the commercialization of the milk extraction industry; the basic motive of the movement led by Dr Kurien Vergheese was to empower and introduce machinery into the milk-making segment and increase the yield of bi-products of milk like cream, butter, curd and ghee. The introduction of milking machines focused on increasing yield with a one-time investment into machines and maximizing farmer profits without interjecting intermediaries.
The base five products usually extracted by the traditional churning method now use cream-separating machines to maximize yield. The basic shift towards the machinery aspect of the milk-yielding business was commercialized and transformed into a larger scale.
REASONS FOR THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF THE MILK MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
- The base of the white revolution or the commercialization of milk manufacturing industry was to establish a transparent medium of communication between the milkmen that were segregated across cities, districts, and states.
- The second objective of such an established network was to make resources available to all the farmers to make resources available to all mid-scale, low-budget, and debt-ridden farmers.
- The milk revolution also boosted the economy of places largely dependent on the rearing of cows and the production of milk.
- The milk revolution emphasized the importance of rearing indigenous cows that were native to the place of their residence.
- The milk revolution also emphasized providing milk products at a fair and nominal price to the consumers and thus saw an increase in the consumption of milk products due to its bulk and massive production.
- Milkmen and milkmaids had a misconception that with the advent of modern machinery, they shall be left jobless and without any means of income; however, with the establishment of cooperatives, the people dependent on milk for their livelihood, people of the same occupation had a chance to pool their resources altogether so that the profit sharing could be done easily.
- Cream separator machines work with finesse and perfection and reduce the cost of procuring labor to a large extent that the techniques of preservation and transportation of milk products become easier.
- The milk manufacturing industry has indirectly provided a lot of employment to people not directly involved in the trading of milk, like dairy sludge which is a bi-product of the milk manufacturing industry and is used for treating soil fertility, whey which is a by-product of the dairy equipment manufacturing industry is used in many health supplements for speedy muscle recovery
Thus it proves milk is indeed the real “White Gold”
