Shopping malls are an important part of modern life. They’re a place where people can go to the shop and explore new products, take their children on fun outings, or even just relax after a long day at work. Shopping mall is evolved over the years, and today they offer much more than just places to buy merchandise: they’re also amusement parks, sports arenas, movie theaters, museums—and even hotels.
So how do these shopping centers keep up with all this change? Here are some innovative examples of how major shopping malls around the world have reinvented themselves in recent years:
The Dubai Mall, UAE
The Dubai Mall, located in the heart of Dubai, is the largest shopping mall in the world. With more than 1,200 shops and restaurants on three levels, it’s no surprise that this mall attracts over 24 million visitors per year.
The Dubai Mall has so much to offer: an aquarium with a shark tunnel; an indoor ski slope an indoor beach complete with wave machines; a skating rink! It also has two hotels connected to it—the Jumeirah Hotel & Spa and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel—and both have been awarded five stars by Forbes Travel Guide.
The aquarium at The Dubai Mall is one of its most unique attractions; it’s home to thousands of marine species from all over the world (including sharks!). It even broke records when it opened its doors back in 2016 as the largest aquarium ever built (it now holds over 100 million gallons of water).
Westfield, San Francisco
The Westfield San Francisco Centre is located in the heart of downtown San Francisco and, as one of only three shopping malls in the city, it’s a go-to destination for locals looking to do some serious shopping. The mall opened in 2004 and has since grown from 400 stores to more than 700.
It offers visitors over 30 restaurants within its food court, an ice skating rink, an IMAX theater, and a bowling alley. Outside you can find an interactive fountain with water displays that are sure to bring out your inner child (or adult!). And if you’re feeling adventurous there’s also a carousel!
You’ll find plenty of entertainment at this mall with such attractions as a Ferris wheel that rises high above the rest of San Francisco’s skyline offering panoramic views around town.
Shinsegae Centum City Mall, Busan

The mall is located next to the Centum City subway station; it’s connected to the Busan Asiad Stadium by an underground walkway that links it to an adjacent shopping complex called Shinsegae International Business District.
The mall has a variety of shops including furniture stores and clothing outlets. You’ll also find restaurants such as Gourmet Street (a buffet restaurant), Barista White Coffee Roastery & Cafe, and Food Court selling Korean cuisines such as bibimbap (rice cooked with vegetables) or grilled meats like bulgogi.
