Depending on your location in the world you may not be able to access the type of disability support you need. You may be eligible to receive accommodations, special items, services, companion services, and State funding.
Companion Services
Whether you are an individual who has an Intellectual Disability, or a caregiver who works with individuals with disabilities, Companion Services may help you. These services are intended to support individuals’ goals and ensure their safety and well-being. These services may be provided in a residential setting, as well as in the community.
Companion Services can provide additional support for those who need it beyond what their support team provides. Companions can help schedule social activities, prepare light meals, and help with housekeeping. A companion can also help with errands like grocery shopping.
Companion Services can be arranged through Consumer Directed programs. These programs are designed to provide community-based opportunities to individuals with disabilities. A Consumer Directed companions professional works with individuals to help them with community activities like shopping, meal preparation, and other functions. Having a companion is also a great way for an individual to develop relationships with other people in their community.
Companion services are covered as part of the Home and Community-Based Services Waiver for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. To receive companion services, an individual must be receiving residential services through a licensed entity, such as a home health agency. To supervise the direct support staff, the agency must hire a qualified development disability professional.
Companion services can be used up until eight hours per day. The hours must be determined by the individual and not a set schedule. Those hours must be documented and tracked.
Accommodations
You can request accommodations for your disability whether you are an incoming student or a current student. Contact the Disability Support Services at your college to begin.
The Disability Support Services Office will discuss your disability and give you information about available services. They will assist you with any documentation or answer your questions. The Office of Disability Services has provided accommodation for more than 30 thousand students. The accommodations can range from adaptive equipment, to help with access, to flexible work arrangements.
The Individual Accommodations Model is a research-based way to determine the best accommodations. This model takes into account your goals, your educational requirements, and your legal rights.
The most common accommodations include academics, such as assistive listening devices and alternative testing. Accommodations can also include services that are not academic, such as housing or transportation. Students with disabilities may also need assistance in adapting their attitudes.
Students must provide the appropriate documentation to their faculty in order to be granted accommodation. Documentation should include recent medical reports or psychological evaluations. The documentation should also include a list listing possible accommodations.
Assistive listening devices (Audio, Note Takers), sign language interpreters, and other testing are some of the most commonly used accommodations. However, there are many more available to students.
Students should contact the Disability Support Services office at their college to find out what accommodations are available and what documentation is needed. The Disability Support Services office will determine if students are eligible and will write an accommodation letter. This letter will be sent out to the faculty of the student’s course.

State funding available for disability support
The state relies on nursing homes, state institutions, and other community-based providers to provide long-term care for people with disabilities. This approach is becoming increasingly costly. The Strategy was launched in April 2001. It provides a framework for government agencies to consider people with disabilities’ needs.
