What Are Disability Supports?

Depending on your location in the world you may not be able to access the type of disability support you need. You may be eligible to receive accommodations, special items, services, companion services, and State funding.

Companion Services

Whether you are an individual who has an Intellectual Disability, or a caregiver who works with individuals with disabilities, Companion Services may help you. These services are intended to support individuals’ goals and ensure their safety and well-being. These services may be provided in a residential setting, as well as in the community.

Companion Services can provide additional support for those who need it beyond what their support team provides. Companions can help schedule social activities, prepare light meals, and help with housekeeping. A companion can also help with errands like grocery shopping.

Companion Services can be arranged through Consumer Directed programs. These programs are designed to provide community-based opportunities to individuals with disabilities. A Consumer Directed companions professional works with individuals to help them with community activities like shopping, meal preparation, and other functions. Having a companion is also a great way for an individual to develop relationships with other people in their community.

Companion services are covered as part of the Home and Community-Based Services Waiver for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. To receive companion services, an individual must be receiving residential services through a licensed entity, such as a home health agency. To supervise the direct support staff, the agency must hire a qualified development disability professional.

Companion services can be used up until eight hours per day. The hours must be determined by the individual and not a set schedule. Those hours must be documented and tracked.
